ENERGY CROPS
provide products that can be converted into biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels. They are conventionally divided into two types of production based on the sustainability of the processes:
FIRST‑GENERATION BIOFUELS
They are derived from dedicated crops managed with input levels equivalent to those of food crops and cultivated on suitable land to maximize yield.
SECOND‑GENERATION BIOFUELS
Second‑generation or advanced biofuels come from by‑products of main crops, agricultural and forestry residues, household or industrial waste, and non‑food crops grown on marginal land.
